Buy each provision for a job, not a memorised count

Provisions are bought before a mission and refunded at a greatly reduced price after it, so the right question is “what problem must this inventory solve?” Read quest length, destination, party skills, and the mission goal before buying. This page is the pre-departure companion to the Curio field table: it explains what to pack; the table answers what to use when a named object appears.

There is no one shopping list that fits every party. Food supports healing and Hunger, Torches add 25 light, and Shovels remove obstacles. Those three jobs are expedition fundamentals. The remaining slots should answer the threat and interaction types actually expected in the chosen region.

Core expedition slots: Food, Torches, and Shovels

Buy Food for the mission's length and the healing margin your party lacks; it stacks in groups of 12. Buy Torches for the route and light plan; they stack in groups of eight. Buy Shovels when an obstacle would be an unacceptable resource loss or detour; they stack in groups of four and remove obstacles.

Do not reduce these basics merely to carry an answer for every possible Curio. A key or Herb left unused is a small cost. Entering a long route without enough Food, light, or an obstacle answer can compromise the whole expedition.

Match specialist supplies to the destination

Use Antivenom for Blight, Bandages for Bleed, Medicinal Herbs for Debuffs and disease, Laudanum for Horror, Skeleton Keys for locked Curios, and Holy Water for its resistance buff and relevant interactions. The current provision reference also shows clear regional differences: Ruins has no region-specific Curio or enemy that requires Antivenom, while Weald, Warrens, Cove, Courtyard, and shared Curios each favour different tools.

Start with the destination's Curio page, then spend specialist slots on the repeated answers in that region. For example, the Ruins table repeatedly rewards Holy Water, Herbs, and Keys; Weald repeatedly rewards Bandages, Antivenom, and a Shovel. Bring fewer speculative answers when your combat kit already cures the condition they cover.

Let free provisions change the final purchase

Several heroes bring a free item: Plague Doctor brings an Antivenom, Grave Robber a Shovel, Crusader Holy Water, Leper and Jester Medicinal Herbs, Arbalest or Musketeer a Bandage, Antiquarian a Skeleton Key, and Houndmaster Dog Treats. Count those items before paying for duplicate stacks.

This does not mean a free item always replaces a purchased one. It means the party composition changes the last few inventory slots. On a long quest, one complimentary Shovel is not automatically enough; on a short one, it may free space for a more likely Curio tool.

Final Darkest Dungeon provisioning is its own plan

The four final quests are not ordinary dungeon shopping. We Are The Flame calls for Bandages and Stress management, while its cited guide says Antivenom is not needed for enemy attacks. Belly of the Beast is long and makes Food capacity a real trade-off. Hell is in the Heart has no Hunger checks or torch management, so Food and Torches are not the priority there.

Read the Runaway and Duelist final-mission guide before assigning those DLC heroes. Provision space, a Talisman plan, and a legal skill bar matter more than carrying a generic “best team” list into a one-shot mission.

Sources and review boundary

Item functions, stack sizes, complimentary hero supplies, and region patterns are checked against the current provisions reference. Curio-specific results belong in the Curio field table. Check the live provision screen for your difficulty, DLC, quest length, and mod state before spending gold.
