The field answer: build around the next legal action
The Runaway is most useful in a party that treats her movement as part of the turn plan. Searing Strike begins in ranks 3–4, Firefly begins in ranks 1–2, Ransack moves her forward, and Run and Hide moves her back two. The reliable composition test is therefore simple: after either movement button, can all four heroes still make a useful action?
The three lineups below are Retail 27890 editorial shells. Their hero order and opening idea are practical recommendations built from the current Runaway skill data; they are not a claim that a particular roster, trinket collection, or dungeon has one mandatory answer. Confirm each companion's equipped skills before departure.
Team one: Burn lane control
Man-at-Arms / Bounty Hunter / Runaway / Plague Doctor gives the Runaway an anchored front, a control slot, and a rear slot that can respond to the party's changing order. Start the Runaway in rank 3 with Searing Strike, then use Ransack when pulling an enemy or clearing a corpse creates a useful rank-2 Firefly turn.
This shell is for fights where displacement matters. The Runaway can place Controlled Burn on an enemy rank, while the control slot creates opportunities for enemies to occupy it. The party should keep one stress or health recovery answer available rather than spending every turn trying to force the perfect Burn chain.
Team two: flexible backline pressure
Crusader / Runaway / Highwayman / Vestal begins with the Runaway already able to use Firefly from rank 2. It is the cleanest starting point when the immediate job is to pressure enemy ranks 2–4 while retaining a conventional healer at the rear.
Use Ransack only when the new rank order still leaves the Crusader, Highwayman, and Vestal with an equipped action. If the encounter needs direct front damage instead, keep Searing Strike ready rather than forcing a Burn setup into a short fight. This is a steadier expedition shell than a dedicated movement puzzle.
Team three: long-quest safety
Hellion / Runaway / Houndmaster / Occultist gives the Runaway room to start in rank 2, then trade places without making the entire party depend on one fixed square. It is a useful long-quest template because the four slots can be assigned front pressure, back-rank reach, control, and recovery before the Runaway's movement is considered.
Choose this shape when the Runaway's job is not to carry every battle. Apply Firefly to establish a high stack, use Hearthlight when its accuracy and critical chance against burning targets affect the team, and take a direct action when a target will die before Burn has time to matter.
Trinkets and skill bars change the recommendation
Infernal Coalstone belongs in a movement shell that can exploit its rank-one knockback, rank-four pull, and Wildfire change. Pyro Accelerant suits repeated attacks into burning targets only when the party can absorb its self-Burn. Warm Scarf is the safer choice for a plan expecting dodge-triggered disruption, but its eight triggers make its remaining state part of the decision.
For the first two teams, a usable four-skill bar is usually Searing Strike, Firefly, Ransack, and either Run and Hide or Controlled Burn. Replace a movement button only after writing down the rank it leaves behind. That one check prevents most “this Runaway build stopped working” failures.
Sources and review boundary
The Runaway's ranks, movement, Burn skills, and trinket effects are checked against the original-game Runaway data and the Burn reference. The named four-hero shells are editorial recommendations for Retail 27890. Recheck the live skill bar, trinket state, dungeon, and platform if a later Retail patch changes a relevant action.
