The field answer: reserve room for the return turn
The Duelist starts in Defensive stance with Riposte, and Anticipation is a free stance switch followed by another action. Her party does not need to freeze in one order; it needs a safe answer after Touché, The Boot, Flèche, or Disengage changes it. Plan the recovery turn before committing to the aggressive one.
These are Retail 27890 editorial lineups, not an imported Darkest Dungeon II rotation. Each keeps a front-facing answer, an ally that can act after a small shift, and a back-line recovery slot. Equip the companions' actual skills for their expected rank before treating any one of them as a finished build.
Team one: guarded Riposte
Man-at-Arms / Duelist / Houndmaster / Vestal starts the Duelist in rank 2, where both her defensive recovery and forward pressure can be planned without displacing the healer immediately. Use Anticipation to refresh Riposte and select the stance for the exchange; do not switch only because the button is free.
This shell prioritizes survival during a marked or exposed turn. The Duelist can take an aggressive action when the front can absorb her movement, then use a defensive action or Disengage only when the party has a legal follow-up. It is the cleanest first composition for learning the class's tempo.
Team two: stun and finish
Crusader / Duelist / Highwayman / Vestal gives the Duelist a rank-2 opening and a direct reason to keep Coup de Grâce available: its current data gives it all-rank targeting, armour piercing, an extra action on kill, and extra critical chance against stunned targets. The lineup should create a stunned or weakened target, then decide whether the finishing action is worth a change of formation.
The Boot can contribute a Stun and Knockback while moving the Duelist forward. That makes it a control tool, not a reflexive opener. If the target order is already favorable, preserve the rank plan and use the stance-specific attack that leaves the rest of the group functional.
Team three: movement-first pressure
Duelist / Highwayman / Jester / Vestal is the aggressive option. It starts with a mobile front pair and two rear slots that can be configured for reach, stress recovery, and healing. It has a higher ceiling when every hero has a chosen action after a forward Flèche or backward Touché; it has a lower floor if that skill check is skipped.
Use this lineup for a player who wants to treat Riposte as tempo, not as a stationary tank buff. Disengage is the emergency reset: its backward move and temporary all-position access are valuable when they repair a plan, not when they create a second problem for the back line.
Select trinkets for the rank you intend to occupy
Champion's Mantle rewards ranks 2 or 4 and penalises DODGE in ranks 1 or 3, so it belongs to a written rank plan. Steel-tip Boots improves Stun chance and critical chance in Aggressive stance; Gilded Mantle rewards a marked, defensive line. Blade Oil is a finish-oriented choice because its next Riposte becomes a guaranteed critical hit after a monster kill.
Do not rank a Duelist trinket without naming the intended stance, first aggressive action, recovery action, and destination rank. The best item in a planned rank-2 exchange can be a liability after an unplanned move to rank 1.
Sources and review boundary
Stance, Riposte, skill, movement, and item facts are checked against the original-game Duelist data. The three named teams are editorial Retail 27890 plans. Use the live tooltip as the deciding record when a patch, trinket state, or companion skill bar differs from this baseline.
