The Runaway at Retail 27987
The short answer: build the Runaway around Burn, enemy movement, and a guaranteed next action after she changes rank. At Retail 27987 she has 22–38 base HP across armour levels, 5–7 base SPD across weapon levels, and movement of two ranks forward or one rank back, so she needs protection more than she did at launch.
Retail 27987 lowers her HP and several skill CRIT values, shortens Firefly's Burn-decay debuff, removes Run and Hide's Burn bonus, retunes Controlled Burn, and changes multiple Runaway trinkets. Those are live changes, so this guide treats the September test build as superseded.
Runaway skills and legal positions
Her seven combat skills answer the first question a build page should answer: what can she actually press from her current rank? Searing Strike works from ranks 3–4 into enemy ranks 1–3, applies 3 Burn, and gains damage against burning targets. Firefly works from ranks 1–2 into ranks 2–4; it trades direct damage for 7 Burn and a one-round Burn-decay debuff.
Run and Hide works from any rank, moves her back two, and gives Stealth for four rounds when she finishes outside ranks 1–2. While Stealthed, it grants two rounds of healing, but 27987 removed the former +50% Burn Skill Amount. Ransack works from every rank and targets every enemy rank: it pulls the target, clears corpses, and moves the Runaway forward one.
The remaining tools are situational but concrete. Hearthlight removes enemy Stealth, raises torchlight, and gives the party accuracy plus critical chance against burning targets. Controlled Burn, usable from ranks 2–4, applies Burn and marks an enemy rank for three rounds; it has two uses per battle. Backdraft, usable from ranks 2–4, needs a burning target, bypasses Guard, copies its Burn to the target behind, and cures the first target's Burn.
A practical movement plan
Begin by equipping four skills that still leave the Runaway an action after the move you expect. A flexible first kit is Searing Strike, Firefly, Ransack, and Run and Hide. It covers the rear-to-front and front-to-rear transitions that the class naturally makes; it does not promise that every dungeon or companion line-up wants the same four buttons.
If a fight rewards long Burn setup rather than immediate direct damage, replace the least useful transition tool with Controlled Burn or Backdraft. Do this only when another hero can continue operating after the Runaway's forward or backward move. The correct position is therefore the position from which the next equipped skill remains legal, not a generic frontliner/backliner label.
Burn setup, decay, and conversion
Burn is not just an orange version of Bleed. In the Retail data, it damages at the end of the affected unit's turn for its displayed stack count, then halves that stack count rounded down. Multiple sources add together; critical hits apply 50% more Burn, rounded up. Firefly is valuable because its 7 Burn is paired with a temporary -50% Burn-decay debuff, while Searing Strike rewards an already burning target.
Use Controlled Burn when an occupied rank is likely to matter for several turns. Its opening hit now applies 6 Burn, while the rank trigger applies 2/2/3/3/4 Burn by skill level. It can trigger again when enemies move through that rank. Use Backdraft only after deciding which target should lose its Burn: it converts the first target's stacks into pressure on the target behind rather than creating free damage.
Skill upgrades: spend for the plan you equip
Original-game combat skills have five levels and are unlocked or improved at the Guild as resolve level permits. Upgrade the actions you have equipped and can repeatedly use in the formation you actually run; a high-level skill that becomes illegal after the first move is not an upgrade priority.
For a Burn-pressure kit, start with the skill that establishes the target state you repeatedly exploit—usually Firefly or Searing Strike—then improve the movement or conversion action that keeps the loop legal. For a rank-control kit, put Controlled Burn and the follow-up it enables ahead of an unused damage button. Check the current Guild tooltip before purchase for the exact level values and cost in your save.
Runaway trinkets with current effects
The Fire's Edge list now supports useful item decisions. Warm Scarf has eight triggers, +10 DODGE, shuffles an attacker when the Runaway dodges, and turns into Pile of Ash when exhausted. Charcoal Effigy also has twelve triggers, heals the Runaway for 3 HP when hit, and likewise becomes Pile of Ash when spent. These are finite-survival choices, not permanent defensive stat sticks.
Pyro Accelerant has twelve triggers; on attack it burns the Runaway for 2 and debuffs burning enemies with -6% CRIT plus +6% chance to receive crits at 120% base. Infernal Coalstone gives +3 SPD while anyone is burning, makes Wildfire reach both adjacent targets, and adds position-specific knockback or pull on attack hit. The Sunstone chain no longer grants bonus Resolve XP: Heated advances at 50% on quest completion, Scorching at 20%, and Searing now self-Burns for 2 on every attack.
Team shells that support Burn
The strongest truthful recommendation is a team shape, not an invented universal best party. A Burn-and-control shell gives the Runaway a dependable Stun, Pull, Knockback, or Shuffle source; Red Hook specifically introduced her as synergistic with those effects. It helps place enemies on a Controlled Burn rank and creates a meaningful Backdraft target.
A movement-resilient shell gives every other hero at least one useful action after Ransack, Run and Hide, or an enemy shuffle. A backline-pressure shell keeps a way to reach ranks 3–4 while the Runaway's Firefly is legal from the front half. Treat these as build tests: record the four equipped skills, opening ranks, dungeon, and trinket state before calling one composition better for your save.
What “best Runaway build” means here
There is no one loadout that is best without a fight type, rank plan, available trinkets, and current patch. This page therefore calls an item or skill data-confirmed when its current effect and build are sourced, and calls a combination editorial when it is a reasoned recommendation from those effects. Community feedback can improve an editorial build only when the version and conditions are visible.
That distinction is useful, not evasive: it lets a reader choose Infernal Coalstone for a Burn-and-movement plan or Warm Scarf for finite dodge control without pretending that either is mandatory in every dungeon.
Original-game data, not sequel import.
Some names overlap with Darkest Dungeon II, but this page uses the original-game Runaway data and a Retail patch baseline. Do not use sequel paths, tokens, or Shrine unlock rules as evidence for this page. The relevant source set is the original-game Runaway data page, the Burn rules, and Red Hook's Retail 27987 notes.
Change log and review boundary
Last reviewed: September 14, 2026, against original-game Retail build 27987 on Steam, GOG, Epic, and PlayStation. Red Hook said Xbox and Nintendo Switch would receive the update later in September, so console players should verify the build shown in-game. Report a discrepancy with platform, build, DLC state, equipped skills, and a screenshot of the current tooltip.
