The Duelist at Retail 27987

The short answer: use the Duelist as a rank-flexible damage dealer who alternates stances, keeps Riposte active, and always plans the rank of her next action. At Retail 27987, her armour progression is 21–37 HP and 5–25 DODGE, while her weapon progression reaches 8–13 base damage and 8 SPD.

Build 27987 promoted the September test changes to Retail. It raises her HP, Riposte accuracy, Touché DODGE, Feint CRIT, Disengage speed and rank-4 defense, Flèche damage, and two camp-skill values. The badge above now points to that live release rather than the superseded test branch.

Start in Defensive stance, then choose the exchange

The Duelist begins an expedition in Defensive stance, keeps her stance between battles, and starts a battle with Riposte for two rounds plus a one-round -50% Riposte damage debuff. Medicinal Herbs can remove that opening debuff. Her shared Anticipation action is free: it switches to the opposite stance, activates Riposte for two rounds, and still lets her take another skill immediately.

That free switch is the class's central planning tool. Use it to choose a skill set before committing to movement, rather than pressing a stance-specific attack and discovering that the next rank has stranded the rest of the party.

Defensive-stance skills and positions

In Defensive stance, Touché works from every hero rank into enemy ranks 1–2. It moves the Duelist back one and grants 40–50 DODGE by skill level until the next Dodge buff. Feint works from ranks 2–4 into ranks 1–2; it marks the Duelist, improves Riposte damage, applies accuracy/protection debuffs to a marked target, and gained 5% CRIT at every level in 27987.

Disengage works from ranks 3–4 into ranks 1–2. It sends her back three, grants 6–8 SPD by level, accuracy, and a two-round window in which her attacks can be used from and target any position. When used from rank 4 it now also grants 30–40 DODGE for three effective rounds. Use it as a deliberate reset, not merely an escape button.

Aggressive-stance skills and positions

In Aggressive stance, Flèche works from ranks 1–3 into enemy ranks 1–3. It has +25% damage, moves the Duelist forward two, and marks her. Coup de Grâce works from every rank into every enemy rank; it has armour piercing, gains critical chance against stunned targets, and grants an extra action on kill.

The Boot works from ranks 2–4 into ranks 1–2. It applies Stun and Knockback at its listed base chances, then moves the Duelist forward one. These three skills give the class real front pressure, long reach, and position control; they do not mean that every stance switch should become an attack. Keep a legal defensive recovery available for the sequence you intend to play.

Riposte and stance management

Retail 27987 lists Riposte at 100 base accuracy and 4% base critical chance. Anticipation can renew it while moving between the two stances; Defensive-to-Aggressive adds temporary critical chance while Riposte is active, while Aggressive-to-Defensive adds temporary DODGE. That makes a Riposte plan an alternating-position plan, not a passive buff to leave running unattended.

An offensive cycle normally uses the free switch to open an Aggressive action when the party can absorb the forward move. A defensive cycle uses the switch to retain Riposte while gaining a safe rank or DODGE line. Both are editorial play patterns derived from the listed skills, not claims that the game has one mandatory rotation.

Skills, upgrades, and equipped loadouts

The original game gives combat skills five levels through the Guild as resolve level allows. Unlike most heroes, the Duelist can equip all seven skills and a newly recruited Duelist has them all unlocked. This makes skill selection less about access and more about keeping the correct answer for the expected rank transition.

For a Riposte/dodge plan, improve the stance switch and the defensive actions you regularly use before investing in a distant-rank attack that does not fit the party. For a front-pressure plan, improve the aggressive action that matches the party's Stun or position control, then retain Anticipation and one recovery action. Confirm the exact current Guild value and cost in Retail before spending heirlooms.

Duelist trinkets with current effects

The listed trinkets now support specific choices. Steel-tip Boots grant +10% Stun skill chance and +4% CRIT in Aggressive stance. Gilded Mantle lowers received crit chance and adds +10 DODGE while Marked. Blade Oil grants +4% melee CRIT and makes the next Riposte a guaranteed crit after a monster kill.

For a riskier Riposte plan, Razor Hilt adds armour piercing against bleeding targets and gives Riposte-hit Bleed plus a crit-received debuff, while reducing Bleed resist. Champion's Mantle gives +20% damage in ranks 2 or 4, penalises DODGE in ranks 1 or 3, and activates Riposte on attack hit. Those effects make a rank-specific trinket a party-layout choice rather than a universal best-in-slot item.

Team shells that let the Duelist work

A rank-flexible shell gives the other heroes at least one useful action after Flèche, The Boot, Touché, or Disengage. It is the safest first approach because the class moves more often than a fixed-rank party expects. A Stun-and-finish shell creates targets for Coup de Grâce and lets The Boot disrupt an enemy before the rest of the party acts.

A Riposte shell should provide healing or damage prevention without demanding that the Duelist stay in one unchanging rank. Do not call any of these shells “best” without listing the dungeon, four equipped skills, trinket state, and whether the recommendation was tested on Retail 27987.
